SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY
This page presents high-speed video samples. These short clips depict the wide range of applications where high-speed video is used.
As mentioned in the home page some of these videos show the hidden beauty that appears only when an event is recorded at a high frame rate. Other videos, on the other hand, show a more complex story. This may incite its further exploration.
Liquid droplet impact
The video shows the beauty of splashing due to the impact of a liquid droplet on a pool of liquid. The impacting droplet is grape juice while the pool of liquid is soy milk. The selection of these liquids improve the image contrast. Also, it helps to keep track of the volume of the impacting liquid. Also, notice that a large portion of the volume of the juice drop emerges with the jet that appears after the initial impact.
The whole events lasts only 0.15 sec.
This type of droplet and liquid pool interaction is a common occurrence in nature, rain impact on the sea or lakes, as well as in industrial applications, irrigation and printing processes, for instance.
High-speed droplet impact
A grape juice droplet fragments after a cylindrical object impacts on it. The droplet is levitating in mid-air by an acoustic levitator. This makes it easier to aim at the droplet. The solid object is teflon, selected to obtain a good contrast of the footage.
The impact speed is close to 200 m/s . Events like this occur when a high-speed train or an airplane impact rain droplets. The time shown in the lower right side of the video is n microseconds.
Different form of fragmentation
A water droplet is held in mid air by acoustic levitation, similar to the video above. However, here a laser beam propagates from left to right and produces the fragmentation of the droplet.
The stamp in the upper left side of the video depicts the time in microseconds
Sports
Baseball
Batting mechanics
The high-speed video, captured at 300 frames per second, displays the body mechanics of the left-handed batter in the footage.
The player exhibits excellent eye-hand coordination. Yet, the slow motion of the footage allows a detailed view of the athlete’s motion. This can be used to improve and optimize his performance and reaction time.
Another sample of the body mechanics of a batter making contact with a baseball. In this footage the baseball trajectory as well as the handling of the bat by the baseball player are clearly displayed. The whole event takes place in less than 0.3 seconds. Video recorded at 600 frames per second
Pitcher mechanics
The video portrays the body mechanics of a pitcher as he performs a throw to the plate. Especially interesting is the motion of the pitcher’s arm as he is about to release the ball. This video also presents the motion of the athlete at 600 frames per second.
EDUCATION
Cutting metal in a lathe
The footage on the left exhibits in slow motion how the tool bit cuts material as the metal rod is turning. Notice how the material cut continuously breaks, it is not a continuous string the leaves the turning part.
The footage adds a degree of understanding of the metal forming process. Thus traditional education methods can benefit from similar video recordings that show the students or trainee staff basic concepts. Such concepts are easier to grasp when viewed in slow motion.
